As you may know, I have made a big transition this season joining the management team at Sandhill Organics. At this point the ground is still a little to wet and most of our work is in the greenhouse. The increase in scale between our farm last year and this year is really noticeable in the greenhouse. We have around 4-5 times more seeded than I had at this point last year. Everything is very condensed in the greenhouse so you notice the impact much more than in the field where plants and planting are much more spread out.
So far this has been really interesting. Where most farms and business gradually ramp up we have had a chance to make a dramatic leap in size in one year. I am learning about some additional efficiencies that come with growing this many veggies. I am also getting a better sense for what is needed to make it all happen, how many seeds, how much soil, and how much time. This is a great first hand experience that few get the opportunity to have especially after having many years of their own experiences running a farm and being able to see the different way of doing things.

Field work is right around the corner (pray for a some continued warm & dry weather) and I am sure there will be a whole new round of things to learn as we begin to prepare ground for 15+ acres of veggies!
On a side note we got our first round of chickens moved outside onto pasture and they are loving it. The sun, fresh air and plenty to explore is always a welcome change.
