Changing Times

We started our farm 6 years ago.  Vegetables have always been central to our farm and this year we are trying to focus our time & energies on vegetable production in order to maximize their potential. It is to that end that we have decided to put our Curly Tail (pork) CSA program on hold. We love having pigs on the farm and they have a place in our future.  However, I was stretched pretty thin last year and need to be able to devote more time to eggs and veggies so we can hone our production practices and then come back to additional enterprises.

A diverse farm, such as our, is a complex puzzle with lots of moving pieces.  Each of the vegetables  we grow (150+ varieties!) has a unique set of needs.  Adding animal husbandry across multiple species of livestock creates a whole other level of management. There were many times where this was a relief.  When I was frustrated with the vegetables I could sneak off for a while and work on a project for the animals.  And when the animal were giving me trouble I had the veggies (who stay where you want them and don’t spill their food and water) to keep me occupied.  More often though I would find myself thoroughly exhausted by the end of the day without the energy to stand and then realize that the animals still needed food and water.  I will miss having the pigs and the personality they bring to the farm around. Things may change and evolve (and we’ll keep you posted on our thinking), however, I look forward to having more time & energy to devote our CSA, veggies, hens, & family.
